Homeless By Birth

I was born homeless,
I was born a girl.
For girls only get a home
Once tied in wedlock.
And I was homeless
Until I exchanged vows.

I was homeless though I exchanged vows,
For they had many homes,
But I was not their own.
And I was to be forged in the flames.

I remained homeless,
Until my consort became one.
Battles over hearths made him vagabond.
I had a home then,
Or maybe an illusion
Transient enough not to last long.

And I was homeless again,
Chasing some dreams.
Fool, I let myself to believe
Home is where two hearts live and cleave.

For thousand nights and as many days
I built some bricks of ice
And made a home of sand,
Nonetheless, homeless I stand.

I was homeless for I was born girl,
I was homeless for I was a mum.
I was homeless for I held the home.
And so I remain, unhoused, rootless, homeless.
